17. The Good, the Bad and the Simply Beautiful

‘Morning, Kerra. Ross has just filled me in on what’s been going on. I wanted to check that you really are okay. I was shocked, so I can only imagine what it must have been like for you being there on your own.’

‘I’m fine. Besides, I had Ripley and Ross, of course.’ I’m trying to make light of it as I don’t want Drew feeling guilty for not being around.

‘I didn’t realise you and Ross were old friends. You never mentioned that.’

‘We went to school together, that’s all. A group of us caught the same bus there and back every day. Ross wasn’t always with us as sometimes his father would give him a lift. During the school holidays we’d often meet up and head down to the cove. It was just hanging out, as kids tend to do.’

‘Well, it was good of him to step up and I’m glad he took Clem’s words seriously. The extra security measures should do the trick but, heck, I wish I’d been there. I’m just relieved to know that he was looking out for you.’

‘Me, too,’ I reply, trying to keep it light. ‘How’s Felicity doing?’

‘She had a rough night again, but the tablets should start to kick in soon. I’m just doing a quick supermarket run before I head back to pack up my things. I’ll be home late afternoon.’

‘You’re not rushing back on my account, are you? Ripley and I are fine, really,’ I reassure him.

‘No. Felicity’s mum has decided to come and stay with her for a bit. It would be awkward if I was around.’

I can hear the disappointment in his voice.

‘Ah, right. Well, I guess I’ll see you later then. Pop in for a coffee if you have time.’

‘Will do. It’s tough being here and then heading for home, alone. Every time I’m with her it gives me hope, though. Makes me sound needy, doesn’t it?’

‘No. Not at all, Drew. Having a special connection with someone isn’t something that can be turned off and on, like a switch. Hang in there, there’s always hope.’

Goodness, where on earth did that come from?
